Respect for the scientific method is little to be found anywhere in the popular culture, with the possible exception of what is simple and dramatic — dinosaurs! Witness the anti-vaccination movement as a particularly depressing example. It doesn’t help that modern physics has produced “theories” which belie the term by being merely elegant mathematical games, which are not testable against reality. Then there’s the fact that we have to have “equal time” for “both sides” (as if every question of fact was divisible into 50% yes and 50% no, instead of one side having overwhelming evidence.)
